Chapter 18
Josh lay on his stomach, one arm tucked under his head, the other dangling onto the floor, snoring into his pillow. No matter what happened during the day, all Josh had to do was close his eyes and he fell asleep within minutes. Moke had tossed and turned a while, but he too, had finally given way to fatigue. Kai had stayed awake a little longer, but the events of a stressful day had finally defeated her.
Only Quinn couldn't sleep.
He couldn't stop staring at her. All he could think about was how soft she'd been in his arms, her smell, the salty taste of her lips as he kissed her. She not only hadn't minded that he kissed her, she had pulled him down to his knees and slipped off his wet shirt, breaking the kiss only long enough to pull it over his head. He couldn't remember how he'd ended up on top of her in the warm sand, and he didn't care. He couldn't get close enough.
Even when there were no barriers between them, even when he was inside her, she'd seemed too far away, as if at any moment he might wake up and find it all to be a great cosmic joke. He remembered the way her hands had fisted in his hair, laying claim to him. How she'd managed to wrap her legs around his hips, locking her ankles, as if she might be afraid he would change his mind and leave at any moment.
Not a chance.
In high school and even in college, Quinn had no problem finding women willing to sleep with him. They seemed attracted by his unique looks and his quiet, almost brooding, demeanor. But this time, with Kai, it was as if, for the first time, his brain was in the game. He had never considered love before, never wanted to have that kind of commitment, now it was all he could think about. He didn't have a clue if he was in love with Kai, he didn't know if it worked that way, but he did know he wanted to find out. Kai, Quinn decided, was the quiet that existed between the waves.
He knew sleep was not an option and decided to take his thoughts out to the beach. On his way out, he paused by where Kai lay sleeping. She was curled into herself with one hand under her chin, the other wrapped around her knees as if she were cold. Quinn resisted the urge to touch her for fear of waking her. He settled for pulling a blanket over her and lightly brushing a stray strand of hair from her face.
He didn't like the feelings churning around inside him. If Moke was right, then it was only a matter of time before Socrates found him. He didn't know how Kai fit into all of that, but he knew he didn't want to risk her safety. He left the little hut and began walking along the beach, but the caged energy inside him wouldn't leave him in peace.
